Motorized Blinds and Window Shades Automation Options

You probably already know that Hunter Douglas PowerView® Automation allows you to operate your window treatments with a remote, an app on your phone or tablet, or your voice in conjunction with the PowerView® Gateway Device. But how do you actually use motorized blinds or window shades? Automation is a wonderful tool that puts light control and privacy in your hands. Learn how motorized blinds and shades work from our team at The Blind Alley below.

How Do Motorized Blinds Work?

Adding Hunter Douglas PowerView® Automation to your blinds motorizes the slats of your window treatment; however, it won't raise and lower the blinds. While you can still lower or raise the treatment with the method of your choice, you can also leave it down and have constant light control using PowerView®. You can adjust vertical blinds by gliding them across the window or door. To manage light:

  • Angle the slats of your horizontal blinds upward to point glare and UV rays at the ceiling.
  • Twist the slats so they're barely noticeable and provide excellent view-through.
  • Close the slats so no light comes through, providing you with a dark room and privacy.
  • Save the settings you like the most.
  • Adjust them slowly, degree by degree, until you find the perfect angle.
  • Create a schedule using your favorite settings so your room is entirely dark when you go to bed or set your blinds so that the perfect amount of sun shines through in the morning.
  • Schedule the slats to close at night so you can enjoy your privacy.

How Do Motorized Window Shades Work?

Window shades automation is significantly different from operating motorized blinds. They raise or lower in a straightforward manner, allowing you to block light or let it in. You can raise or lower your Hunter Douglas shades to the desired preference depending on the day, even setting your shades on a set schedule. Additionally, some optional enhancements give you more window shade automation options.

One great add-on, the Top-Down/Bottom-Up feature, allows you to open your shade from the top or the bottom of the shade so you can select the part of the view you want and what you want to block, whether it's the viewpoint of nosy neighbors or the glaring sunlight during a sunny afternoon. You can save your favorite settings to return to them or schedule them for different times of day.

With dual shades, you have an option called Duolite®, which is a fantastic choice for Bellevue, WA, homeowners. This feature uses two independently operating shades, usually light-filtering and a second light-blocking shade, for flexible light control in any room of your home.
